I’ve written over fifteen novels. A lot of them have been published over the years; some are long out of print.
Many of the characters and their tales are still too present in my mind after the books have been sent off to the publisher. Or perhaps scenes had to be cut for the sake of brevity. Inevitably, the characters have more to say about themselves and their circumstances.
Here are a number of short tales from a handful of those books.
Written a few years after the events of Lichii Ba’Cho, it’s Dusky Holt’s birthday. Her lover, Shannon, has a gift for her.
Anpo Wi Ile and her mate, Ketlin, returned to me about a year after I wrote Tiopa Ki Lakota.
In my book, Orphan Maker, many readers didn’t care for the one of my protagonists. This is Gwen’s full story. It’s ugly but goes a long way in explaining her behavior in the book.
By the same token, Loomis’s tragic background was glossed over in Orphan Maker, though it was hinted at enough to keep the reader interested. This is what the Riddicks did to Loomis years before Gwen arrived. The mystery of who killed the older Riddick boy is solved.
The next several entries are from my Sanguire series. In this tale, a young Margaurethe O’Toole has been presented at court for the first time. And Elsibet discovers what she wants.
These events take place the day after Want as we see how Margaurethe is fairing after enjoying Elsibet’s tumultuous attentions.
Initially Whiskey met Father Castillo at a soup kitchen in Seattle. It was he that reported her to the European Sanguire, his actions beginning the cascade that became The Strange Path.
Nijmege’s hatred for Elsibet the Sweet Butcher knows no bounds. In this vignette, she learns that her enemy has been reborn in the United States. Her vengeance will come.
The import of the Sweet Butcher’s return is impossible to keep quiet. Whispers travel faster and farther than low voices. Dorst has been searching for Elsibet for centuries. Has he found her?
The one man who never doubted that Mahar’s Prophecy was false is dispatched by Nijmege to confirm that his best friend, the woman he murdered centuries in the past, has not returned.
Fiona and her band of Sanguire younglings currently use Seattle as their hunting grounds. Dorst meets with her, calling upon her family connections to search the city for the Ninsumgal’s second coming.
Last we find out what Whiskey was up to the night before all Hell broke loose around her and she discovered that her destiny was far more vital than dying a homeless kid on the street.
